What We Believe

This page expresses the beliefs held by members of Holy Cross in a simple, easy to understand form. Words on this page that are in RED will reveal an explanation of whatever is in red if you hold your mouse cursor over them.

So, who is this Jesus guy anyway?

Well, this is a good question because noone else has influenced history as Jesus has.
Jesus is the son of God.
Jesus is both God and man.
  Jesus personifies love.
  Jesus loves us unconditionally.
Because of his love, Jesus suffered, died, and rose again.
All who believe in Jesus are guaranteed eternal life with him in heaven.
Why did Jesus do this? Because Jesus is love.

Tell me more about this god that you teach about and worship.

God, whom we worship and teach about, is not something that can be explained. I know it sounds silly, but God is just so far above human comprehension that it is impossible to explain him. The next best thing we can do is describe him, although that gets complicated too. God is also known as the Trinity.
The Father is the creator of all that exists.
The Son, Jesus, is described more thoroughly above. Jesus is the son of God the Father, and he is one God with the Father.
The Spirit creates faith through God's Word as well as other means. The Spirit proceeds from the Father and the Son, that is, the Spirit was not made and the Spirit is not a child of the Father. The Spirit is one God along with the Father and the Son.
The three persons are all one God, but remain seperate persons. They are also all equal and all eternal.

So you're a Lutheran church. What does this mean?

Being Lutheran, we accept and teach the Bible-based teachings of a group of people now referred to as "the reformers," most notably one named Martin Luther, that inspired a great change in the Christian church in the 16th century. The teachings of Luther and the reformers can be described in three short phrases:
Grace Alone: God loves the people of the world, even though they are sinful, rebel against him and do not deserve his love. He sent Jesus, his Son, to love the unlovable and save the ungodly.
Fatih Alone: By his suffering and death as the substitute for all people of all time, Jesus purchased and won forgiveness and eternal life for them. Those who hear this good news and believe it have the eternal life that it offers. God creates faith in Jesus Christ and gives people forgiveness through him.
Scripture Alone: The collection of documents now known as the Bible is God's perfectly correct and authoritative word, in which God reveals his law and his good news of salvation in Jesus Christ. It is the only rule and norm for Christian beliefs.
